Benefits for the People of Crete

The Crete Valley project is far more than a technical upgrade; it is a social and economic transformation that places Crete at the cutting edge of Europe’s energy transition. The benefits for local citizens and businesses are multifaceted:

1. Significant Reduction in Energy Costs
By utilizing Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and storage technologies, households and businesses participating in the Community Energy Labs (CELs) will see a substantial drop in their energy bills.

2. Energy Autonomy and Security
Harnessing local resources—sun, wind, biomass, and geothermal energy—reduces Crete’s reliance on imported fossil fuels. Local production ensures a stable energy supply and price stability, even during international energy crises.

3. Creation of New and Sustainable Jobs
The project boosts the local economy by creating "green" jobs throughout the entire value chain: from the initial design and construction phases to the long-term maintenance of facilities and the management of new energy services.

4. Combating Energy Poverty
A major priority is supporting vulnerable households. The Energy Community model ensures a fair distribution of benefits, making clean energy affordable for everyone and strengthening local social cohesion.

5. Environmental Improvement and Public Health
Replacing old oil boilers and polluting energy sources leads to a drastic reduction in CO2 emissions and improves local air quality. This directly protects our natural environment and the health of our residents.

6. Active Participation (Energy Democracy)
Citizens are no longer passive consumers. Through the project, they participate in the design process, co-decide on energy solutions for their own area, and gain direct control over the energy they produce and consume.
