On Monday, 21 July, Arkalochori took an important step toward the future of clean energy.
Despite being in the heart of the summer season—with numerous cultural and recreational events—the response of Arkalochori residents to the invitation for the information event on the district‑heating system was particularly encouraging.
The project presentation was delivered on behalf of Minoan Energy Community by Aristotelis Tsekouras, a member of its scientific team, who focused on the technical and practical aspects of the system’s operation: requirements for end‑users, the billing model, and the multiple economic, environmental, and social benefits. The district‑heating plan for Arkalochori includes the installation of a biomass boiler serving more than 70 homes, the Municipal Swimming Pool, and other facilities. The presentation was preceded by remarks from both President Mr. Giannopoulos and Mayor Mr. Kegeroglou.
The discussion that followed was not only extensive but also highly substantive. The questions raised by attendees reflected their active engagement and thoughtful consideration of the design, implementation, and operation of the district‑heating system. This demonstrates not only interest but also a willingness to participate meaningfully in the decision‑making process.
It is entirely understandable—and legitimate—for citizens to express reservations or questions about a project introducing a technological innovation with which they are not yet familiar. This highlights the need for continuous information and open communication, so that trust can be built gradually and solidly through knowledge.
It is worth noting that this initiative is not merely technically pioneering; it represents a locally rooted energy‑transition effort. It was designed by scientists from the wider Arkalochori area—people who understand the region’s particularities—and in close collaboration with the 40 European partners of the CreteValley project, which funds the initiative. A truly collective project, combining international expertise with a local footprint.
At this point, we would like to express our warm thanks to the Municipality of Minoa Pediadas, which has consistently supported our efforts, and personally to Mayor Vasilis Kegeroglou for his support and active presence, also as a member of the Community’s Board.
Yesterday’s information event is not a standalone action. Citizen engagement will continue in the coming period, with the aim of strengthening participation and integrating residents’ concerns and ideas into the project’s implementation process.
Citizens may also contact the one‑stop service for energy‑transition matters, operating in recent months at the Community’s offices, developed within the framework of the LifeLOOP project.
