PVSmile addresses the urgent need to modernize photovoltaic systems and energy communities in line with Europe's energy transition objectives. While PV deployment continues to grow, many systems remain technically rigid, digitally fragmented and socially underutilized.
PVSmile bridges this gap by integrating digital technologies, data spaces, AI and governance innovation to enable PV systems to actively support grid stability, flexibility markets and community-driven energy services.
Through international collaboration and real-world demonstrations, PVSmile delivers scalable solutions that strengthen energy sovereignty, citizen participation and climate resilience.
The goals that guide PVSmile’s work and impact
- Digitalizing the PV lifecycle
PVSmile introduces advanced digital tools, AI-driven analytics and data spaces to optimize the planning, operation, maintenance and end-of-life management of community-integrated PV systems across their entire lifecycle. - Enabling smart grid readiness
The project enhances the flexibility and grid integration of PV systems through hierarchical control strategies, smart power electronics and real-time data exchange, ensuring compatibility with evolving smart grid requirements. - Empowering energy communities
PVSmile promotes inclusive, participatory and multi-level governance models that strengthen citizen engagement, support underrepresented groups and foster trust and consensus within energy communities. - Unlocking data-driven energy services
By leveraging energy data spaces, blockchain and secure data-sharing frameworks, PVSmile enables innovative energy and non-energy services, including peer-to-peer trading, flexibility services and community-level optimization.
The project consortium consists of 28 partners from 10 countries, with strong representation from the academic sector, high‑tech companies, and, of course, broad‑based citizen energy communities
